In September 2007 Active Hands became a limited company. It’s a small, but significant, step for a company which has been manufacturing gripping aids since 2000, but with a story which goes back even further.
Following a spinal injury in 1996 which left him a tetraplegic, Engineering student Rob Smith became frustrated by the limitations his poor hand function caused him. As a result he began to design various aids to enable him to live a more independent life.
Tracking down the necessary materials, he gave the designs to his mother, Marion, to make on her sewing machine at home. The results were so exceptional, that in Spring 2000 his family decided to form The Active Hands Company to make the aids available to others.
From these humble beginnings, Active Hands has grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of gripping aids for the disabled. The transition from ‘Sole Trader’ to ‘Limited Company’ is a step which illustrates our growing business and wholehearted vision: to promote independent living for all!
